Jack in the Box Preschool endeavours to ensure the safety of our children at the setting.

We ask parents to provide;

  • 8 hour or long lasting suncream before Preschool.
  • Sun Hat:Ideally a “Legionnaire” style (with a neck flap) or a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Shoulder-Covering Clothes:Please avoid strappy tops or vests; T-shirts are best for preventing shoulder burns.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes:Sandals are great, but please ensure they have a back strap and closed toes to prevent trips and stubs during active play.

Sunglasses – These are not required;

  • Safety Risks:Cheap or “toy” sunglasses can shatter during active play, potentially causing eye injuries.
  • Compliance:Young children often pull them off, lose them, or swap them with friends, creating a hygiene and logistical headache for staff.
  • The “Shadow” Factor:We find that wide-brimmed hats (Legionnaire style) provide sufficient eye protection by keeping the face in constant shade without the safety risks of glasses.

Sunglasses – We will accept;

  • Safety Standards:They must meet the BS EN ISO 12312 standard (look for the CE or UKCA mark) to ensure they actually block UV rays rather than just being tinted plastic.
  • Naming:They must be clearly labelled with the child’s name.
  • Straps:We suggest “wraparound” styles with elastic straps to keep them secure.

Please note, sunglasses may be removed if the child is participating in high energy activity or they become a distraction.

When we take the children out to play in the sun we make sure that they have as much shade from the sun as possible. We will endeavour to set up activities in the shade and will monitor how hot and how much time the children are exposed to the sun.  We will use natural shade, trees, gazebo or indoor play. We are lucky to have trees that provide us with shade at different times of the day.

We will also make sure the children have more water to drink and stop for regular drink breaks.

We also encourage them to put on the long lasting sun cream before they come to school.  We will put sun cream onto the children if we have parent’s prior permission to do so, and only if the children are in session all day. We will use a branded suncream and parents will need to sign form.  Parents will be charged if we put sun cream on more than once.

Staff will also be expected to role model by wearing sunscreen, and hats to protect themselves.
