We are committed to comply with the DfE requirements to move our Early years settings towards net zero by 2050. This means reducing our carbon footprint, embedding sustainability in the curriculum, engaging parents with this aim and working with the wider community.

Our action plan will cover four main areas:

Decarbonisation

We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions by.

  • Becoming more energy efficient. We will reduce the amount of time our lights are on. If all the children are outside, we will turn lights off and rely more on the natural light we have in the room. We will turn off all electrical points when not in use.
  • We like to get outside every session. When we are inside, we will keep the heating appliances to a minimum and encourage staff and parent to dress their children in warmer layers. This will alter as we move thought the seasons.
  • Reduce waste and recycling. We will continue to encourage the children to sort lunch box recycling and take home what we can’t recycle at the setting. We ask parents to support this and provide lunch in washable containers.
  • Monitoring and reducing the use of carbon emissions. We have families that already walk to school, this can be improved and monitored, and we hope to promote by joining in “walk to school week” and by educating the children.

Adaptation and resilience

  • We are committed to taking actions to reduce the risk of impact on climate change
  • Talking to the children about the world around them
  • Spending time with nature outdoors, protecting our wildlife and caring for our local birds and mini beasts.
  • Environmentally friendly routines and helping the children sort and recycle waste in the setting
  • Support water wastage by educating the children and looking at different ways of catching the rain water.

Biodiversity

  • We will look at different ways of recycling our food waste, talk with The church about a compost bin for us all to use.
  • We feed the birds and grow and release butterflies each year. We grow plants and seeds, using our Forest school area as we have little garden at the setting. We will look at ways we can change this.

Climate education

We are committed to educate our children to learn more about climate change, giving them opportunities to learn more about a sustainable future. We will plan a curriculum to support this

At Jack in the Box we will continually be reflecting on our practice and always consider what more can we do. This will be supported by our Sustainability Lead Amber Pragnell.
